Pak Yan Lau - Tactile

from Sonic Spheres [A tribute to Pol Bury] by Transonic

/
  • Compact Disc (CD) + Digital Album

As part of the events organized in La Louvière to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Pol Bury (1922-2005), Transcultures (Interdisciplinary Center for Digital and Sound Cultures) commissioned several sound creators (of diverse aesthetics and adventurous practices ) of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, a piece freely inspired by the work and the universe of this visionary multi-creator born in the industrial city of La Louvière (BE), who went through the great avant-gardes of the 20th century (surrealism, CoBrA, kinetic art…) without ever accept no dogma.

In 1952, the facetious Bury had his double Ernest Pirotte write in the “Diary of a maker”; “Some days I think I am more of a musician than a visual artist”.
Indeed, the processes and series explored by Bury in his visual work such as “Multiplans”, “Softenings”, “Cinetizations”, “Distorting Mirrors”, “Punctuations”, “Volumes”… and his praise of slow movement (“by the slowness, slyly thwarted, I could believe in the dilation of time” he wrote in 1965) evoke effects or techniques used in contemporary sound creation.

These “Sonic Spheres” feed as much on the material and kinetic explorations as on the poetic, surreal and pataphysical explorations of this indisciplinary artist and genius inventor.
This sonic tribute is also a way of prolonging certain flashes and recurrences of a work whose richness and arborescence we never cease to rediscover in very varied fields (sculpture, painting, engraving, writing, cinema, jewelry, etc.), with this constant of opening wide the doors of the possible / impossible and of concretizing this Bul thought "irreducible to any rational condensation" (Marcel Havrenne) which he had initiated, in the mid-1950s in a small farmhouse in a small Hainaut village renamed ironically “L'Académie de Montbliart”, with his poet-publisher friend André Balthazar.

“The adventure that I wish would be endless, if possible, has only just begun”.

about

When Philippe Franck from Transcultures/Transonic invited me into the world of Pol Bury, I was delighted to discover his kinetic sculptures and drawings. When I have been asked to create a sound piece inspired by him, I didn’t know where to start.

I wanted to touch the materials he used (metal, wood, brass, magnets, motors), at the same time I also wanted to include his use of spheres and geometry. His conception of time. His view on movement. There was so much information, and at the same time I really liked his simplicity and playfulness.

I ended up sculpting the piano, choosing my sounds to be tactile, by using wooden sticks, magnets, tape and movement, I tried to capture his spirit, or at least what he sets off in me.

I learned that I am still in a hurry. Slowing down is easier said than done.
