"This piece, based on my solo work in concert, uses a sampling device allowing me to multiply myself as much on the cello as on the voice. Some sounds prepared in advance further enrich the soundscape that I develop there. As in a story of fulfilled desire..."
-------------
Matthieu Safatly, French cellist, singer, alter mixer, graphic designer and videographer based in Brussels since 2003, began his musical apprenticeship at the age of 7 at the Rouen Conservatory.
He began composing in 1995 with Quattrophage (a very personal mix of written contemporary music, concrete music and improvisation) with which he released his first album in 1996 on the legendary Sordide Sentimental label.
Since then, he has multiplied concerts and recordings around the world, always with Quattrophage, but also during 10 years with Present (group from the famous Belgian combo Univers Zero), Wild Shores (electronic music), Black Sifichi & Negative Stencil (electro-poetic cabaret), Nava Rasa (voice-tablas-cello trio of Indian music)... as well as in collaborations with John Russell, Norscq, Jim Denley, Denis Fragerman, Jean-Jacques Duerinckx...
He also practices music for the theater (among others on Heiner Müller with the Compagnie Faim de Siècle), choreography (in the Mona XY project by Yves Mora ) and for film screenings.
Today, he continues to juggle different projects:
- Solo in a captivating audiovisual creation called Polyphony 4 Solos. This installation presents him playing the cello and singing, surrounded by television sets broadcasting pre-recorded films of him singing and playing. A quadraphonic acoustic solo!
- Still with Quattrophage, in the indefinite duration sound performance MNOP, a work composed on the rigor of Pascal's Triangle with a result where the notion of time quickly disappears giving way to a deep and magnificent contemplation. A fabulous album presents part of it at Le Petit Label (France).
- Under the name of Herr Gramophone, using in an electro-contemporary way only samples of Contemporary Music to take listeners on a journey into lively universes.
- As a composer for his twin brother Tom Tempête, an endearing French-speaking looser electro crooner.
- Very soon solo on the film Nosferatu by Murnau…
