lyrics

Maria Malinovskaya - We kindled a fire
-----------

we kindled a fire
slept in a tent
with someone with no body left

he drew on his pipe
sweet and sour smoke rose from its holes
we asked for a turn
— no he said it’s mine
— just let us try

the yellow-green half-melon of the night sky
loomed over our campsite

this is killing me he said
and leapt up from his haunches
slapping his thighs

what was killing us
was precisely t h i s
which is why we were there

each of us wanted to look cheerful
but secretly kept a few photographs

march
everyone was certain
march
but there wasn’t any proof

intercourse with someone without a body
is an apophatic action
and alters certain
subconscious convictions
(“the colonial herald”)

seeds ripened in the center of the sky
and began to fall like dry rain
striking against the walls of the tents

tired of each other
we began to steal kids from the settlements

only he and I lived the way that we lived
which in itself was treason

------
