about

Jean-Jacques Duerinckx alias Maurice Charles JJ (Braine-L’Alleud - BE) mainly practices sopranino and baritone saxophones, his first influences being Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, John Surman, Hamiet Bluiett. His encounter with saxophonists Lol Coxhill, then Michel Doneda, was decisive: his playing and musical style are guided in a universe where sound material and abstract melodies coexist and merge. Sensitive to the visual arts, he is interested in electroacoustic music, sound arts and more particularly by the notion of “soundscape”.

Instrumentalist, intuitive by nature, he likes to evolve in a universe populated by strange sound entities where sound becomes matter where matter becomes sound. Beyond that, he collaborates with other forms of artistic expression by bringing to them this unique color specific to the sopranino saxophone. He is also the founder of the OMFI collective (One Moment Free Improv) and a member of the interdisciplinary collective Lamaphi.

Played live on February 15 2021 at home in Braine-L’Alleud (Belgium)
on the sopranino and tenor saxes on a backing track I have composed.
The backing track uses mainly sound materials that can be produced by baritone and sopranino saxophones (filtered our natural). Some synthetic sounds are also used.

lyrics

"Like flowing water always finds its way, music always finds a way to reach us if we let it enter our soul"

Stephan was like a brother in music to me; we were playing as a duo.
Stephan passed away during these difficult times that we are experiencing.

Stephan went discreetly.
Alone at home during the lockdown, I had to do something to express my feelings...
my sadness for a friend who is gone.
This piece in two parts reminds me of the precious moments we spent together.
Forever the music we shared will resonate in my soul.
Thank you my friend. I will never forget you.
